14 Reasons Why Change Is Good

Change is good. We hear that phrase all the time, but accepting change isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. Change—even a small change— brings uncertainty, and with uncertainty comes feelings of unease. But change helps tremendously with personal growth, and it can also be the thing that helps us become unstuck when we’re in a difficult place in our lives.

As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change, so here are 14 reasons why changes, even a tiny changes, are good.

Why Change Is Good

1. Change can be the thing that gets us out of a difficult mental health space

If you’ve ever gone through a period of anxiety or depression, as so many of us have, you may have noticed that a big life change is the thing that helps you snap out of it. Think of moving to a new town, apartment, or house, changing jobs, or even the ending of something difficult—changes can help shift our mindset, gain a new perspective, and bring us into a new space.

2. Change can help us form new habits and break old ones

A change as small as a vacation or new job can be huge when it comes to habit formation. For example, if you’re trying to quit caffeine or eat less sugar, changing up your environment when you’re not in the typical space where you engage in these things can really help.

3. Change brings new opportunities and connections

Change can help bring about new opportunities—and some that you didn’t even know were possible. For example, moving somewhere new could mean a transition that allows for new friendships, changing jobs could end up sparking a new and exciting career path for you. And if you’re single, a new activity could help spark a romantic interest.

Change can bring about new connections.

4. Change helps us move forward

Feeling stuck? A change may be exactly what you need to move forward in your life. If you’re having a hard time concentrating or just feel a little “blah,” a change can be the thing that helps you take important next steps and move forward in your life.

5. Change helps us develop resilience

If we’re constantly hovering in our comfort zones, it’s hard to develop resilience. But when we make a change, we learn coping strategies and resilience starts to come naturally—so the more you make changes, especially scary changes, the more resilient you will become.

6. Change makes life more exciting

If we always stayed in our comfort zones, how could we ever expect life to be exciting and rich? Change helps make life more dynamic, so try not to resist change—with change comes excitement and joy.

Change helps make life more exciting.

7. Change builds self-confidence

The more we invest in change, the more confident we become. Think of it like this: If you're constantly putting yourself in new and challenging situations, you'll gain a greater understanding of the fact that you can handle anything. Really.

8. Change helps you discover who you really are

When we stay stuck in one place, it's hard to explore the deeper, more complex parts of ourselves. But when we make changes, we learn more about ourselves—including coming to a deeper understanding about who we really are.

9. Change gets us out of destructive routines

Change can help get us out of destructive routines, whether they're related to not following through with habits and promises to ourselves or engaging in generally destructive behaviors. By making a big change, we can pull ourselves out of a destructive headspace.

Change can help bring about new, healthier behaviors.

10. Little changes create a snowball effect

When we make little changes, they can lead to a larger snowball effect. In other words, when we make little changes, it can make us feel braver when it comes to making bigger changes.

11. Change triggers progress

If you're looking to make any kind of progress in your life, change will be an important factor. Making any kind of change triggers progress, after all—so lean into it.

12. Change can help foster creativity

Change can help spark new ideas, thus enabling us to be more creative. So if you've been looking for something to fuel your creative spark, start by making a change—you'll most likely be dazzled by the magic that comes from it.

13. Change can help us see things in a new light

When we don't have much change in our lives for a while, it's easy to get stuck in certain thought patterns or biases. But when we give our lives a bit of a shake-up, we often find we can see things in a new (and better) light, whether that means better understanding someone else's perspective or finally seeing why certain behaviors may not be serving your personal growth goals.

14. Change brings on a sense of fulfillment

Ultimately, change can lead to a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, knowing that we have pushed ourselves to grow and achieve our goals. As difficult as it can feel to make a change, in the end, it's the key to living a richer life. Embrace it!
